About these handouts:
Literacy educators are often familiar with assessing oral reading fluency in beginning readers. As students read aloud, the educator can hear where in the text the student is struggling. However, once students are expected to read silently, it becomes more challenging to understand the difficulties they are experiencing.
Identifying students who are inefficient silent readers is critical, as the instruction for improving silent reading fluency differs from students’ regular reading practice. These handouts provide you with Silent Reading Norm Rates, as well as a quick method for measuring silent reading fluency and a how-to guide for implementing reading efficiency training.
