About Us

About the Stanford Taylor Foundation

We are a nonprofit educational foundation, focused on the physical process of reading. Research shapes everything we do to improve outcomes for students and schools.

Who We Are

The Stanford Taylor Foundation was established in 2022 to carry forward the work and legacy of Stanford E. Taylor. We are an active research organization, conducting field research in K–12 classrooms on how visual skills and reading efficiency shape what students are able to learn. We partner with university researchers, vision specialists, and school districts to study these questions where they matter most—with real students, in real schools.

We translate that research into practical tools, products, and programs that help educators guide the students they serve toward their full potential as learners. Nimble Reading, our flagship program, is a direct outgrowth of Foundation research, of two decades of prior work by Alexandra Spichtig, John Ferrara, and others, and of the substantial body of science on the role of vision in reading.

Our Mission

The Foundation has two primary objectives:

  • to advance leading-edge research, instruction, and technologies that support effective visual skills and reading efficiency development
  • to promote an understanding of the essential role visual and perceptual skills play in reading, learning, and sports
